Elephant Outreach Program

We offer a special extra-curriculum elephant activity for the children of nieghbouring villages and Maun area primary schools. We accommodate a group of 10 children plus two adult chaperones at a time. This excursion is structured as a three-day program. The first afternoon will is spent getting to know each other and the area, possibly going on a nature walk, and learning about elephants, including a unique experience of walking in the bush under the protection of our three elephants. An evening game drive is enjoyed before preparing dinner over the campfire.  The next morning is spent participating in activities and discussions that can help us explore the interactions of elephants in their habitat/ecosystem, with each other, and with people.  Topics include the needs of elephants and other wildlife, sustainable wildlife conservation, Botswana’s tourism industry and the local economy, and other environmental issues.  We plan to develop our educational program so that is integrated with the Botswana school curriculum and are trying to make it accessible to larger numbers of children.  We have worked in conjunction with environmental education specialists, the Principal Education Officer for Primary Education and selected teachers in Maun, students, and members of the villages in NG 32 to develop our program to meet the needs of the people as well as the elephants.
